Computer case screws are the hardware used to secure parts of a PC to the case. Although there are numerous manufacturers of computer cases, they have generally used three thread sizes. The Unified Thread Standard (UTS) originates from the United States while the ISO metric screw thread is standardized worldwide. In turn, these thread standards define preferred size combinations that are based on generic units—some on the inch and others on the millimeter. The #6-32 UNC screws are often found on hard disk drives and the case’s body to secure the covers. The M3 threaded holes are often found on optical disc drives and floppy drives. Galvanization, or galvanisation, (or galvanizing as it is most commonly called in that industry), is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, to prevent computer case screws rusting. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which parts are submerged in a bath of molten zinc. Galvanizing protects in three ways:
It forms a coating of zinc which, when intact, prevents corrosive substances from reaching the underlying steel or iron.
The zinc serves as a sacrificial anode so that even if the coating is scratched, the exposed steel will still be protected by the remaining zinc.
The zinc protects its base metal by corroding before iron. For better results, the application of chromates over zinc is also seen as an industrial trend.
