Square head screws are also known as square head bolts. The head design of the square head bolt enables an easier wrench grip for nut tightening. They are usually used in new construction to mimic an older aesthetic or in railway applications. Square head machine bolts were the industry standard prior to hex bolts gaining prominence. Square bolts are now most commonly used for aesthetic purposes to provide a rustic look in a new structure or to match existing fasteners in an older structure. Zinc coatings prevent oxidation of the square head screws by forming a barrier and by acting as a sacrificial anode if this barrier is damaged. Zinc oxide is a fine white dust that (in contrast to iron oxide) does not cause a breakdown of the substrate’s surface integrity as it is formed. Indeed, the zinc oxide, if undisturbed, can act as a barrier to further oxidation, in a way similar to the protection afforded to aluminum and stainless steels by their oxide layers. The majority of hardware parts are zinc-plated, rather than cadmium-plated.
