A stainless bolt is a form of threaded fastener with an external male thread. Bolts are thus closely related to, and often confused with, screws.
The distinction between a bolt and a screw is unclear and commonly misunderstood. There are several practical differences, but most have some degree of overlap between bolts and screws.
The defining distinction, per Machinery’s Handbook, is for their intended purpose: Bolts are for the assembly of two unthreaded components, with the aid of a nut. Screws, in contrast, are used with components, at least one of which contains its own internal thread, which even may be formed by the installation of the screw itself. Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. However, it is not fully stain-proof in low-oxygen, high salinity, or poor air-circulation environments. There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and corrosion resistance are required. Stainless steels contain sufficient chromium to form a passive film of chromium oxide, which prevents further surface corrosion by blocking oxygen diffusion to the steel surface and blocks corrosion from spreading into the metal’s internal structure. Passivation occurs only if the proportion of chromium is high enough and oxygen is present.
